Wise to cancel

I think the decisions to cancel the Littlehampton bonfire celebrations was a wise and right choice by the Littlehampton Bonfire Society committee, as weather conditions were deteriorating.

Heavy squally showers and strong winds throughout Saturday, and the biggest storm in a decade forecast within 24 hours, made the risks to high,

It was good to see collectors on the streets with their collection bins that day, and others selling programmes. Hopefully, many people responded with their cash contributions, as every little bit helps.

It was disappointing for all those who had worked so hard over the year, but their thoughts were definitely on the health and safety of crowds on the seafront, and the participating bonfire Societies travelling long distances in stormy conditions. An excellent record of just four cancellations in 61 years shows how fortunate we’ve been to have enjoyed so many bonfire nights.
