Young diplomats’ success in united nations simulation

Twenty-three Christ’s Hospital students joined over 400 students from across the world at the 4-day event, which simulated the debate of the United Nations.

Issues discussed by the students included the security situation in Syria, female genital mutilation, discrimination based on sexual preference, the environmental effects of mining and nuclear disarmament.

Negotiations stretched from early in the morning until late into the night as the students gathered support for their ideas.

One resolution by Christ’s Hospital student Onyinye Udokporo (BaB) on racism in sport successfully passed in committee to be debated by all 400 delegates in a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prizes for outstanding participation were presented to team members Renie Anjeh (GrW), Edmond King (MaB), Onyinye Udokporo (BaB) and Isobel Walker (BaB) during the Closing Ceremony of the conference.

The conference organisers also thanked Christ’s Hospital student Katie Macleod Hall (GrW) during the ceremony for her assistance chairing legal deliberations in a simulation of the International Court of Justice.

Dr Alistair Goddard, who organises the School’s MUN programme, commented: “It is terrific to see our best team members do so well after all their preparation work in advance of the conference. However, it was also rewarding to witness development amongst the younger students: some went from being terrified of speaking in such a formal setting at the beginning of the conference to being infuriated that they had their speaking time constrained in front of the General Assembly!”

“The Christ’s Hospital MUN team has again demonstrated that it is amongst the best in the country with another outstanding result. I am very proud of all involved”, he added.
