Youth speaks for Rotary Cranleigh contest

This year’s adjudicators were Celia Stanton, a former deputy head teacher at Farlington School, Andrew Clark, head teacher at Park Mead Primary School and Rev’d Roy Waters, Deacon at Jesus Christ Redeemer of Mankind Catholic Church.

“The subjects were most interesting and varied,” said Michael Hart, organiser of the local round of the competition. “The judges were impressed with the standard of the presentations and had a very difficult time in deciding the winners.”

The Intermediate winners were from Glebelands School, speaking on the subject of “The Tangled Web”. The team comprised chairperson Hannah Ede, speaker Jade Lindo, and Hannah Gibbings as the proposer of vote of thanks.

The winning Senior Team, from Cranleigh School, spoke on the subject of “Designer Babies - Is This The Beginning Of The End?” Charlotte Tristem was the chairperson, the speaker was Genie Baretto, and the proposer of vote of thanks was Ellie McAleese-Park.

The winning Intermediate Team goes forward to the semi-final at the University of Surrey in Guildford on 8 February. The semi-final for the Senior winning team will be held at Bushy Hill School, Merrow, on 13 February.

Youth Speaks is a national competition run by Rotary every year, with local, district and regional rounds culminating with a national final, which will be held this year in Maidstone on 10 May.
