In her weekly column for Sussex World, Alison Griffiths – MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton – writes about her party’s economic plans.

Whilst the government spend their time infighting and finalising plans to find clever ways of taxing you more, the Conservatives continue to outline how we would cut tax, cut spending and get Britain back to work.

Why does this matter? Because without such measures our economy will continue to remain stagnant. Our ballooning welfare bill and other spending must be tackled to reduce the amount of money the country borrows and to curb our rising national debt.

When it comes to welfare, this does not mean taking away support from those that genuinely need it. We must make sure that the right people are getting the support they need whilst also supporting those to get into work and help them overcome the personal challenges they face.

In our fully costed plan, we have identified £47billion of savings, including £23billion from welfare reforms.

Welfare needs to be fair and the taxes that you pay should not be used to fund increasingly lavish commitments that the country can ill-afford. Making such savings would allow us to reduce taxes.

The Prime Minister is not prepared to tackle this as we saw earlier this year when he attempted to find £5billion in welfare savings but u-turned in cowardice when his MPs threatened to rebel against him.

Our country deserves better. We simply cannot sustain the amount of borrowing that currently sees us pay over £100billion in debt interest alone. And borrowing continues to rise with the government repeatedly exceeding their own target limits. We cannot afford to continue like this.

Cutting spending; cutting tax; backing business and get Britain working again – this is our plan that will put Britain back on track. Leader Kemi Badenoch made a speech about it last week and you can read more about it online at conservatives.com
