Out-of-control youths make life a misery on two North Bersted estates

A North Bersted resident showed a top police officer items which had been thrown into her garden.

The woman told Chief Inspector Jim Bartlett she had to endure a range of objects, from a bicycle wheel and chain to rocks being hurled into her property.

She said she was intimidated by gangs on the roofs of the garages bordering her garden who have damaged her shed and greenhouse many times. Her complaints about life on the Trees Estate were among several raised at a 90-minute public meeting held by Bersted Parish Council.

Six members of the public '“ along with ten parish councillors '“ attended the session at the Jubilee Community Centre.

Parish council clerk Fiona Dobbs said they stated lives on the estate and the Bersted Green estate were being made a misery by out-of-control youths of both sexes fuelled by cheap alcohol.

These pockets of anti-social behaviour '“ amid a mainly law-abiding and peaceful area '“ reduced confidence in the police and instilled fear in elderly residents.

CI Bartlett, the most senior police officer in the Arun district, addressed the problems. He told the meeting reported crime was reducing.

MP Nick Gibb also attended the meeting. He promised to approach Arun District Council and other organisations to see if the matters could be solved.
