WINDSURFING, canoeing, expeditions, climbing and snowboarding are just some of the activities on offer to students through Angmering School s new outdoor pursuits programme.

The Sports College status awarded to the school last year has been a springboard to launch new opportunities to students, through after-school clubs, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme and within the GCSE timetable.

Thirteen students have just completed their Duke of Edinburgh bronze expedition, including navigating and walking a 25 kilometre route in wet, blustery conditions.

Paul Jackson, Angmering s outdoor pursuits co-ordinator, said: "This was the culmination of several months training, and an assessment weekend which was delayed due to the foot-and- mouth outbreak.

"The students demonstrated self-reliance and teamwork to complete the venture and deserve to be congratulated on their achievement."

A new bronze award group will be starting this year, along with a silver award group.

Mr Jackson stressed the importance of adventurous activities in inspiring and motivating young people. "We have recognised the importance of using outdoor pursuits for the personal and social development of students and have many challenging activities planned.

"There are after-school clubs introducing students to outdoor pursuits for the first time. The climbing club has been successfully running for one year and students regularly climb at the indoor wall at the Bognor Arena, with occasional sandstone climbs near Tunbridge Wells."

The school also has exciting plans for its own indoor climbing wall soon.
