Packed week of eco learning and poetry at Worthing school

Springfield Infant School and Nursery, in Sackville Road, held an Eco Week to round off the half term and the days were full of fun-packed activities where the children learned about what they can do to help the planet.

They were recycling, making paper, junk modelling and having a brilliant time last week, while learning about the damage being done to the planet and what they can do to help at school and at home.

The school’s ECO Warriors met to look at what the school can do in the future in order to be more eco friendly.

Head teacher Becky Wycherley said: “The children have embraced the topic enthusiastically and I am very proud of their efforts.”

The week ended with an assembly to celebrate all of the work they had been doing.

Springfield Infant School also welcomed a performance poet last week.

Jim MacCool, from the Performance Poetry Society, provided two sessions on Friday for pupils and parents to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Sandra Dennis, national tour co-ordinator, said: “He does a lovely interactive poetry and song show. The children had great fun doing poetry and dance with him, and they all worked really hard.

“He uses limericks, short verse and stories in verse, the sort of things they can sing in the playground so that they can ‘own’ the poetry. It is a real door-opener to playing with language and a lovely way to learn. They are having fun so the rhythm of words becomes instinctive.

“Teachers have so much that is prescriptive and once they start having fun with it, it is the gateway to helping them understand it.

“Jim works with people of all ages so the parents enjoy it just as much. It is layered, really skilled work so they can pick up things at their own level.”
