Pain before gain as Littlehampton floods work beings

More than 2,000 homes and businesses will be given extra protection against flooding from predicted sea level rises for the next 100 years.

However, the work will cause major disruption, particularly for businesses in the Pier Road/Arun Parade area, which will be closed to traffic until May and July, respectively. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

The Environment Agency, Littlehampton Harbour Board and Arun District Council have worked together on drawing up designs to not only safeguard properties from flooding, but enhance the river walkway, too.

Businesses and residents have been consulted over the plans, but the Gazette understands that some concerns remain over how much their trade will be affected during the coming months, while recognising that the extra flood protection is necessary.

Contractors will begin work in Pier Road from Monday, October 21, and from that day, free parking will be available to customers of shops, kiosks and restaurants in Pier Road and Arun Parade, and Harbour Park, in a special area of the West Green car park.
