PAUL O'BRIEN: Town centre transformation back on track

After some long overdue underground electricity works put the project back, we are now seeing bricks go down in the Montague Street repave at a steady rate and we should slowly see the precinct opened up more and more as the bricks go down.

Next you should start to see the completion of the seating area and the new bandstand which will allow space for live music and performances, something our old bandstand did not.

The project was rather unfortunately delayed because of the cabling underground needing to be upgraded and it was felt this was best to do before the bricks were laid instead of being dug straight up after completion by a utility company.

Although this has pushed the project back it should all be completed sometime in August. It has been a long drawn-out process which we have been campaigning for for many years.

You only have to go 20 metres down the road to see how badly the old paving is cracking.

The new smaller bricks being used in the repave should last much longer before breaking – hopefully in the region of 30 years.

In other news for the town, which we all often refer to as ‘Sunny Worthing’, the Town Centre Initiative has invested in a sunshine meter that is kept on top of the beach office.

This allows us to record the actual hours and minutes of sunshine the town receives on a daily basis.

It has long been known that Worthing benefits from its very own microclimate and being a seaside town it’s great that we can actually show just how sunny we are.

In the first few days of use it has shown an average of more than seven hours of sunshine a day.

It’s true what they say – the sun shines most on the southern coast!
