1,000 metres of grass destroyed in Horsham field fire

Fire crews spent five hours yesterday tackling a large blaze in a Horsham field which destroyed 1,000 metres of grass.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called out just before 12.30pm to the field fire in Coltstaple Lane.

A spokesman said: “On arrival an area of stubble – approximately 1,000 square metres – was alight with multiple small pockets of fire.

“Crews used two hose reels and beaters to damp down the hotspots.”

He added: “The cause of the fire was accidental spread from a controlled burn.”

Fire crews from Horsham and Crawley left the area soon after 5.30pm.
