Aldi's Cuthbert the Caterpillar sculpture spotted in Eastbourne and Brighton in nod to M&S rivalry
A festive sculpture of a supermarket’s caterpillar cake has appeared in East Sussex in a nod to a ‘long-standing friendly rivalry’.
A sculpture of Aldi’s signature chocolate cake – Cuthbert – was pictured at various spots in Brighton, including the Pier and Royal Pavilion, before reaching its home in Eastbourne.

The Christmas tree-shaped Cuthbert also paid a visit to an M&S store in a nod to the supermarkets’ ‘friendly rivalry’.
A spokesperson for Aldi said: “Cuthbert caused a stir during its Brighton tour, with the festive visit being snapped and shared on social media.

“Decorated from head to toe in baubles and fairy lights and complete with a Santa hat and festive shoes, the topiary is an astounding 8ft tall and 12ft long.
“In a nod to the long-standing friendly rivalry, Cuthbert even paid a visit to M&S, stopping by to spread some festive cheer to its well-known adversary.”
Cuthbert will reside outside Aldi, in Pacific Drive, Eastbourne, from December 18 to December 22.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Cuthbert is an Aldi icon, so it only felt right we gave him a festive twist, swapping chocolate for topiary, baubles and fairy lights to spread the festive cheer.
“After letting him loose for a spot of Christmas sightseeing, he’s now settling into its new home at our Pacific Drive store in Eastbourne.
"We can’t wait for shoppers to come down, grab a photo and get into the Christmas spirit with him.”
