‘Amazing’ moment for East Preston woman as submarine wreck is found

IT’S a moment one East Preston woman thought she would never have – finally being able to put her grandfather to rest.

But for Lyn Shore that hope could become reality, following the discovery of the wreckage of the submarine in which he died a hero’s death off the Turkish coast, almost a century ago.

Her grandfather Geoffrey White was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for his courageous action during the First World War, when his submarine, HMS E14, was sunk by enemy fire.

Lyn, of Seaview Avenue, was on holiday in Spain when the wreck was discovered.

She said: “When we first heard it we thought, ‘How wonderful, we can finally put him in a proper grave’.

“It was a staggering discovery.

“Our son, Russell, was on his phone and he was keeping us all up-to-date about the story.

“His father-in-law saw it in the paper first and let him know about it.
