Artwork by children will be displayed around Alfriston as South East Water highlights the importance of safety while it replaces an old
burst-prone water main in the village.

The water company began installation of 600 metres of pipe on January 2 and it is expected to take five months to complete.

Safety fencing has been put up around the working area and South East Water was keen to make sure children understand why it is needed and thought the artwork would be a bright and welcome addition to the area while the works take place.

The activity is also educational with pupils at Alfriston Primary School being asked to design a poster showing how to stay safe near a construction site.

Jeremy Dufour, South East Water’s project manager, said, “To children a construction site can seem exciting but we wanted them to know how dangerous they can be.

“We asked them to design posters to show what safety on a work site means to them and there were some excellent drawings.

“It’s important everyone takes extra care when works are going on and we wanted to build awareness.

“Our work is vital to continue the supply of top quality drinking water to local people.”

Three overall winners were chosen by Lindsey Hudson, head teacher at Alfriston Primary School, with each receiving a voucher donated by the water company.

The primary school was delighted the children had the opportunity to take part in the competition and learn more about what is going on in their villages.

Lindsey said, “We’re extremely grateful to South East Water for donating the prizes and look forward to seeing the drawings displayed around the village.

“Our pupils loved being a part of the competition and it helped to show the potential dangers while works are going on.

“Seeing the children’s posters on the fencing will really make the village feel part of the works.”

The works have caused some changes in the village but clear diversion routes are in place for vehicles.
