Bexhill celebrates landmark anniversary with seafront event

To celebrate the landmark anniversary, the Bexhill Community Events Group organised a free family fun day on the Metropole Lawns at the De La Warr Pavilion.

The town was founded by Anglo-Saxon King Offa of Mercia when he signed the Bixlei (Bexhill-on-Sea) charter on August 15, 772AD.

Saturday’s event included a re-enactment of the signing of the charter, which granted the King land to St Peter’s Church in the old town, with words composed by Claire Baldry.

Anglo-Saxon troop Age of Penda also carried out demonstrations, allowing families to try on the clothes and the theatrical weapons.

Visitors were treated to live music from Kevin Terrell and the Other Band, as well as afternoon tea served by the Bexhill Lions, a range of food and craft stalls, and a vintage car show.

Event organiser Lynn Brailsford said: “It was great to see so many Bexhillians enjoying themselves on Saturday. A big thank you to all the performers, stall holders and visitors for helping to make it such a memorable day for the town.

“Also, thanks to the Rotary club for stewarding the event – and to Christian Outreach and Litter Pickers for the generous help they gave us. A brilliant demonstration of community groups all pulling together to do something good for our lovely town!”
