Bognor RAF branch marks Battle of Britain’s 80th anniversary with pier service

The RAF Association’s Bognor Regis Branch held its annual Battle of Britain Service last Sunday (September 13) with a Covid-19 compliant service behind closed gates on the pier.

Of the 30 people invited the service, 15 were ex-RAF veterans, three were from the Royal Navy and one was ex-Army, and they were joined by mayor Phil Woodall, mayor’s consort Steve Hearn and councillor Jim Brooks.

The service was conducted by the branch Chaplain, the Reverend Brian Shersby.

David Hewlings, branch secretary, said: “Regrettably, the flypast by a Chinook from 18B Squadron RAF had to be cancelled for operational reasons.

“However, with 18B Sqn currently being one of the few Squadrons on operation duties in Mali, their personnel were very much in our minds and thoughts.

“Just as in 1940, the Royal Air Force continues to be defending us, our principles and way of life, on the frontline of conflicts and where humanitarian aid is needed in countries across the world.

“Our personnel are putting their lives on the line on a daily basis.

“The Bognor Regis RAFA Branch supports the RAF’s Chinook Force when deployed on active service.

“We are currently putting together welfare parcels to be sent out to the personnel in Mali.

“Donations of fruit cake, dry coffee, tea bags, biscuits, etc. – but not chocolate – are very welcome.
