The Man barbershop in Bognor Regis has launched a festive fundraiser to help a ‘loving father’ of three recover from a life-changing battle with Covid-19.

On Christmas Eve, staff are running a fundraising day featuring a BBQ, face painting, a raffle, live music, and haircuts – with all proceeds going to Adam Fil’s rehabilitation fund.

Adam, 34 from Portsmouth, was left fighting for his life when he was diagnosed with Covid-19 in August 2021 and rushed to Queen Alexandra, where he was also found to have four different bacterial infections.

After he was placed in a medically induced coma, Adam’s condition worsened as he suffered from sepsis, a cerebral haemorrhage, collapsed lungs and an ischemic stroke.

Adam’s wife Aneta, alongside children Gabriel, Max and Jessica, were told his chances of survival were low.

"They told us to say our last goodbyes to Adam,” Aneta wrote on Adam’s gofundme page.” Even then we never gave up! We kept on fighting the fight.”

Miraculously, Adam, a ‘fighter’ himself, started responding to treatment. His internal haemorrhaging cleared up, holes in his lungs healed and his breathing began to steady.

Despite the turnaround, Adam has a long and expensive road to recovery ahead. He’s lost movement in most of his body and needs special treatment from a private hospital in Poland to stand any chance of living a normal life.

That’s where The Man comes in. Christmas Eve fundraising is a yearly tradition for the Linden Road barbershop, and staff hope to make good on a precedent set over several years of successful fundraisers: last year, they raised £3,000 for the treatment of a ten year old boy suffering from a rare condition. In 2020, they raised more than £2,000 for Southampton Hospital.

They said Adam “needs people with big hearts to help him come home.”

Barber Slawek Borkowski added: "He’s been in hospital for so long, he was in a coma for so long and now he needs help to recover. This is all to help pay for his physiotherapy. He was only 34-years-old. He went from being a normal guy to someone who can’t move their body.”
