Boys and girls come out to play at Pett Sports Pavilion

The much anticipated opening ceremony of Pett Sports Pavilion took place last week (Monday May 2), drawing a large crowd of local people and councillors despite the not very springlike drizzle.

The sports pavilion, situated on the recreation ground in the heart of Pett village, was rebuilt after Pett Sports Association received a £47,435 grant from Sport England in 2013 as part of the Olympic legacy. The Inspired Facilities fund, part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme, took the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country.

Every sports facility that received funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.

Chair of Pett parish council, Cllr Judith Dean, who attended Pett Sports Pavilion’s opening ceremony, says further fundraising meant that the pavilion was able to be built to a much higher specification than its predecessor. “The builder, RPT and architect, Meadowshed did a fantastic job to provide the village with a much needed sports pavilion, “ she said.

“It will serve not just the village of Pett but the surrounding villages too.”

The pavilion will now offer high quality facilities for the local cricket team, full disabled access, more sustainable heating, and includes a new functions room that it is hoped will be used by all members of the local community for social and sporting activities. And as a result, a new junior cricket side, Pett Piranhas, now play at Pett.

The opening ceremony, well attended despite the drizzle, included councillors Chris Saint and Roger Bird.

Cllr Dean, gave a welcoming speech and two players from Pett Piranhas Junior Cricket Club cut the ribbon to officially announce the pavilion ‘open’.

Free cake was handed out to all those who attended. Cllr Dean added: “It was a very successful day and it is hoped that it marks the start of a new era of sport in Pett and the wider area.”

Pett parish council wish to encourage sports and welcome enquiries from any sports club that would like to hire the facilities. The pavilion will also be available to hire for private events. For further details call 07577 126837 or email [email protected].
