Candy celebrates award win for home

Candy, a Jack Russell cross schnauzer, joined her owners Kathy and Ted Shirley and housing staff from Hanover Housing Association as they celebrated retaining the organisations RSPCA Silver Community Award Welfare Footprints (CAWF).

The national retirement housing provider received the award thanks to its continued commitment to residents as a pet friendly housing provider.

Candy was brought to the estate after her owners moved from Lindfield.

Mr and Mrs Shirley from Mill Hill Close in Haywards Heath commented that they were pleased that Hanover had won this award.

The Shirleys, who have brought Candy up since she was a puppy, were pleased to see how well Candy has settled into the estate and has soon become the ‘estate dog’. Candy is known by most of the residents on the estate and loves to join the residents when they meet in the garden for a chat and loves a fuss made of her.

Candy will soon let people know if they have stopped fussing her by giving a quick bark to make herself known.

The Animal Welfare Footprint is part of a scheme to celebrate, promote and reward the work of local authorities and housing providers in a number of service areas that have an impact on animal welfare.

Participation in the scheme has more than doubled in size with the society receiving over 150 applications from 109 different organisations in 2012, compared with 66 from 49 in 2008.

The scheme has three levels - bronze, silver and gold - which carry progressively more demanding criteria.

Anne Everson from Hanover Housing Association said; “We are delighted to have received the award. Next year we will hopefully be going for gold.”
