Community Fundraisers, a volunteer-led, not-for-profit group, is getting ready to host its annual free Christmas Day meal at the Newell Centre in Chichester, offering food, friendship and companionship to people who might otherwise spend the festive day alone.
The initiative began 11 years ago when colleagues Julie Sandalls and Sue Applin came up with the idea of providing a traditional Christmas dinner for people experiencing loneliness, isolation, financial hardship or homelessness.
Having previously worked together for a small independent charity in Chichester, the pair wanted to find a way to give something back to their local community.
What started as a simple idea has since grown into an annual event, with more than 100 meals now served each Christmas.
Julie said: “For us, Christmas is about more than a meal. It is about making people feel valued, included and remembered at a time of year when loneliness can be particularly difficult.
“Every year, our dedicated volunteers give up their own Christmas time to help prepare, cook and serve the meal, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner in a friendly and welcoming environment.
“We are now preparing for our 11th year, and we are incredibly proud to continue this tradition. However, organising an event of this size takes a huge amount of time, commitment and generosity.
"We would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers, past and present, as well as the local businesses that have supported us over the years. In particular, we would like to recognise Kate red lips, Chichester Waitrose, Starline Taxis and La Fish for their generosity and support in helping make our previous Christmas meal a success.
"As we approach Christmas 2026, we want to continue making a difference to people who need support, friendship and somewhere to belong.”
