Coastal Currents headline artist Ornagh transforms 36 mirrors and 250 lights into MIRROR MIRROR at Priory Meadow shopping centre this weekend.
An augmented reality sculpture it claims to be an immersive exploration of self-perception, conflicting internal voices and the unstable narratives through which identity is formed.
Irish-born, Hastings-based conceptual artist Ornagh will unveil her brand new artwork, which brings together 36 mirrors, 250 red and white lights and handwritten fragments of internal thought.
Running at Priory Meadow Shopping Centre from September 18–20, the free installation forms part of the Coastal Currents Arts Festival.
Messages handwritten in lipstick move between fear, desire, self-criticism, confidence, uncertainty and resilience. As audiences travel around the circular structure, the language remains fixed on the glass while the person reflected behind it continually changes. The words remain fixed, while every face reflected shifts.
Visitors can also use their phones to unlock an augmented-reality layer of video art and characters within the physical installation.
Ornagh said: “I became fascinated by how differently we can see exactly the same person depending on the lens we’re looking through. A thought can feel completely true in one moment and its opposite can feel equally true in another. MIRROR MIRROR asks how much authority any one of those versions of ourselves should be allowed to hold.”
There is a free launch event at Priory Meadow shopping centre on Friday February 18 at 7pm. You can park in the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre car park but please walk around the outside of the building to access the event via the entrance near Pizza Express.
