Coastguard warns Eastbourne residents to stay safe this Easter

In anticipation for people venturing to the beaches this bank holiday weekend, the coastguard has issued a warning to residents.

A statement from the coastguard said, “The weather is warmer in places but the sea is about its coldest at this time of year.”

According to the coastguard, if you get into trouble you should put your hand in the air, shout for help and float.

The Birling Gap Coastguard has also urged people to keep roads clear.

A statement from the Birling Gap team said, “With lockdown restrictions being slightly eased, we are expecting a very busy weekend in the local area.

“We are asking in advance that, if visiting the area that the public kindly not block roads, access points or any gates that we may need to access in an emergency.”

Last year the team said it was often slower to respond to emergencies due to access points and roads being blocked.

The statement said, “We will be out patrolling the coastline over the bank holiday weekend liaising with our colleagues in partner agencies. Please also follow current government guidelines including social distancing and staying local.

“Please stay well away from cliff edges and bases as we have had a significant amount crumble this year. If taking to the water always let someone know where you are going and when you are due back.”

People are also warned to check tide times and weather conditions, pack provisions, don’t litter, and call 999 and ask for the coastguard if you need help.
