Coronavirus: Eastbourne MP suspends public surgeries and is prioritising those affected by virus

The Eastbourne MP has suspended advice surgeries in the face of the coronavirus outbreak.

Caroline Ansell says constituents can still contact her via email or telephone and says she is prioritising the support needed for those affected by COVID-19.

She said in a video posted on her social media pages, “My office is hard pressed to provide really important advice and signposting and we are working very hard on behalf of Eastbourne people stuck all over the world.

“Please bear with us in this period of time because we must prioritise the support needed in the face of this virus and not some of the wider issues that have concerned people.

“Those things are important but right now what we are facing really demands all the bandwidth that I have.”

Mrs Ansell also praised residents who have rallied together to look after the elderly and vulnerable.

She said, “We must look after those who aren’t connected. That’s going to be a really important hallmark of the work to come.

“I’m working hard with people to hold together, step forward, and face this challenge.”

This comes after it was revealed yesterday a person is being treated for coronavirus at Eastbourne DGH.

Two people in East Sussex have been officially diagnosed with the virus, according to the latest figures from Public Health England.

The latest advice from the government, announced on Monday (March 16) is:

– Everyone should avoid gatherings and crowded places, such as pubs, clubs and theatres

– Everyone should work from home if they can

– All ‘unnecessary’ visits to friends and relatives in care homes should cease
