Back in spring 40 volunteers connected with 5,065 vulnerable residents in 10 weeks to create a community of connections and communication.

During this run-up to Christmas, which is often the loneliest time of year for many older people anyway, Eastbourne Together is asking people to join the group and reach out to vulnerable residents through a friendly phone call.

The group say it is finding people need a warm conversation around this time of year rather than practical support.

A survey from Age UK revealed that 1.5 million older people feel Christmas is the loneliest time of year, something that is made worse due to the threat of Covid and the social restrictions it brings with it.

As an extra incentive, Councillor John Ungar has offered a bottle of champagne each month to the person making the most phone calls.

Anyone wanting to get involved should call or text Sarah Corin on 07967 211059.

Equally, if you know someone who would welcome practical support from Eastbourne Borough Council’s Hub, get them to call 01323 679722.
