MP for Worthing West, Sir Peter Bottomley, said: "The police officer shot dead in a custody centre in Croydon has been named as Sgt Matiu Ratana.

"The rugby-loving, long-serving and well-respected sergeant, on the brink of retirement, lived for a long time in Goring-by-Sea and was involved with the Worthing Rugby Club.

"This is the time to remember that at all hours of every day, police officers attend troubles of every kind.

"Let us pause, reflect and honour the officers who do their duty for us, amongst us and who may have to suffer for us."
