Developers given go-ahead to build new homes in Cooden, near Bexhill

Bellway Homes Ltd has secured outline planning permission to build 85 new homes on land off Clavering Walk in Cooden.

The development, which is to be built on an 8.13-hectare site, will comprise of a range of two-, three- and four-bedroom houses.

Bellway said just over half of the site (4.18 hectares) will be provided as public open space, while 26 of the homes will be provided as affordable housing for rent or shared ownership.

Daniel Bradbury, regional director for Bellway South London, said: “Our plans for the Clavering Walk site are the result of careful planning and extensive consultation with local residents and key stakeholders.

“We are naturally pleased that our application has been approved by the council and we are confident the development will prove to be a positive addition to Bexhill.

“The development will benefit an extremely sustainable location, just 500 yards away from Cooden Beach railway station which has services to Bexhill, Ashford International and Eastbourne.

“A key priority for us when designing the scheme was to retain the natural beauty of the site, and this is reflected by the fact that we have allocated more than half of the site as open space, with new trees to be planted alongside the existing ones which are to be retained.

“We will also be providing a sustainable urban drainage system as part of the development which will improve drainage on site and in the surrounding area.

“We look forward to starting work on the first homes in due course and delivering these homes to Bexhill.”

In February, Bellway, which in June 2019 was originally refused planning permission to build the homes on the outskirts of Bexhill, won its appeal against Rother District Council’s decision.

The developer first submitted its application in December 2018.
