Several other tennis-themed activities have been taking place in the town including a free tennis fan zones the Beacon Shopping Centre and in Devonshire Place as well as the Eastbourne Tennis History Trail.

Council leader Stephen Holt said the town has ‘come alive’ with the tennis.

He said: “The tennis tournament is in full swing, and as always, the town has come alive in this exceptional weather, demonstrating its love for this fantastic event.

"My heartfelt thanks go to our partners at the LTA, and to the huge team of volunteers and staff who work around the clock to make it such a success.

"A particular thanks to the Grounds team, led by Danny Negus, who care for the courts with such dedication and pride.

"This Sunday, following Saturday's finals, the LTA is running a community day - giving residents and children the opportunity to play on these famous courts, with coaching provided.

"It's a wonderful chance to be part of the magic, and I'd encourage as many people as possible to come along and give it a go.”

Lead Member for Tourism and Place, Cllr Jenny Williams added: “What a glorious start to the week filled with thrilling matches, sunshine and a superb south coast atmosphere.

"As well as all the sporting excitement on court, the town is truly celebrating with colourful tennis displays, welcoming hospitality and even live screenings of all the action.

“Last year the tournament generated more than £5 million to our local economy, showcasing the town to millions around the globe. With all eyes on Eastbourne once again and hotels and restaurants full to the brim, we look forward to another successful week and a valuable economic boost to the season.”

A tennis heritage trail has been launched in Eastbourne to celebrate the town’s sporting heritage.

The Eastbourne Tennis History Trail features 11 tennis legends displayed at locations across the town.

Designed to be ‘explored at any pace’, the trail encourages visitors to uncover Eastbourne’s tennis history while discovering the town’s shops, cafés, attractions and seafront along the way.
