An ESFRS spokesperson said that at 8pm on Thursday June 4, in time for the Clap for Carers, firefighters reached the end of their challenge.

Through a mix of running around the station, on treadmills and cross trainers, for 24 hours a day, the firefighters pulled together to ensure their mileage clocked up.

The spokesperson said, “There are some very sore legs and feet, but as a result of all the hard work a total of 1,290 miles was covered for the event.

“There has been some fantastic support from the local community and further afield, particularly as this was held as a closed event due to the current situation.”

The spokesperson said examples of support included a local takeaway donating meals for firefighters and there was also a ‘welcome’ delivery of ice creams from an ambulance crew.

“A lot of generosity has been shown and more than £3000 has been raised so far for the worthy charities being supported by the event. These being the Fire Fighters Charity, Eastbourne Mencap and NHS charities,” the spokesperson said.
