Eastbourne MP raises fly-tipping concerns in House of Commons

MP for Eastbourne Josh Babarinde has raised concerns in the House of Commons about fly-tipping and pressed the government on what more can be done to tackle the issue.

Mr Babarinde challenged Mary Creagh MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Nature, on Thursday, July 9 on the action being taken to help communities like Eastbourne prevent fly-tipping, improve enforcement, and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

It follows his recent ‘community walkabout’ in West Devonshire, which brought together residents, community groups and local stakeholders like Eastbourne Borough Council and Sussex Police.

Mr Babarinde asked Ms Creagh whether she would commend the work of residents and for her to outline the government’s plans ‘to tackle fly-tipping once and for all.’

Ms Creagh ‘paid tribute’ to the local group in Eastbourne and shared the government’s introduction of a penalty system against fly-tippers.

As part of The Policing and Crime Act, those caught could receive between three and nine points on their driving license, leaving them at risk of disqualification if they accumulate 12 points in a three-year period.

Speaking after raising the issue in Parliament, Mr Babarinde said: “I am incredibly grateful for the amazing work of local community groups and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep Eastbourne looking its best.

"Many regularly give up their own time to clear litter, report fly-tipping and take pride in their neighbourhoods.

“However, they should not have to clean up after those who choose to illegally dump their waste.

"Fly-tipping blights our communities, and residents rightly want to see stronger action to prevent it and hold offenders accountable.

“I will continue to work with residents, the local authority and the Government to ensure Eastbourne gets the support it needs to tackle this issue once and for all.”
