Edgy Hastings Bonfire effigy takes a swipe at suspicious fires

This year’s Hastings Bonfire effigy took aim at local buildings that may have been the target of arsonists.

The effigy depicted a caricature of Kith Flint, lead singer of the band Prodigy who had a hit with a song called Firestarter.

In the background were various Hastings landmarks that had been destroyed or damaged by suspicious fires including the St Leonards convent building and the former Saturdays nightclub in George Street. Another sign on the effigy said ‘Denied’ alluding to planning permission being refused.

A member of the bonfire society explained: “This town has a history of people setting fire to buildings when planning permission has been denied. We, as a town, are fed up of that happening. Hence this effigy, aimed at all those who start the fires.”

The effigy was exploded with fireworks at the end of the evening as part of the display.
