They were alerted to the situation by local wildlife charity Wildlife Matters rescue group. The incident took place at the Ravenside retail centre on Monday October 19.

A spokesperson for the wildlife charity said: B&Q is the only building with netting on the Ravenside site. The bird was under the netting, which is some two – three feet above the roof, but flying around.

“We alerted B&Q and they reported it to their head office and said they would get maintenance down with a platform to release it.

“After nothing being accomplished by just after 5pm I called the fire brigade who arrived just before 6pm. They called their raised platform unit, as they didn’t trust the strength of the roof and cut a large hole in the netting to allow the bird to escape.”

A week earlier Wildlife Matters had brought in a huge crane to reach a pigeon that had become trapped in netting at the Hastings library building.
