The calendar features 12 independent butchers from across the UK. Think Calendar Girls with a butcher’s twist and a few strategically placed items to protect modesty. Steve explained: “The idea actually started after I saw a joke post Shaun from Fairweather’s Butchers and Deli had put on Facebook. I contacted him and jokingly said we should make a butchers’ calendar. A few months later, I decided to put the idea into action. “I wanted to bring together 12 independent butchers from across Great Britain, representing England, Scotland and Wales. Not only to raise money for a fantastic charity, but also to shine a spotlight on independent butchers and remind people that we’re still here! “Traditional butcher shops are disappearing from our high streets, and I wanted to showcase the hardworking independent businesses that are still keeping the trade alive. We’re passionate about what we do, the quality of our products and the communities we serve. Hopefully, the calendar will encourage people to support their local independent butcher, wherever they live. “I chose Mental Health UK because it’s something incredibly personal to me. I’ve had my own battles with mental health over the years, stemming from a difficult childhood, time in foster care, being adopted and experiences that have stayed with me throughout my adult life. “For years I struggled with my mental health, turned to alcohol to cope and found myself in some very dark places. There were times when I genuinely struggled to see a way forward. “I’m now over four years sober, but that doesn’t mean life’s suddenly perfect. Mental health isn’t something that just disappears, and I know how easy it is to put on a brave face while struggling inside. “For a long time, I kept so much bottled up, and I know I’m not alone in that, particularly among men. “That’s why I wanted to do something that would get people talking. By being open about my own experiences, even the parts that aren’t easy to share, I hope others realise they’re not alone and that there’s no shame in asking for help. If sharing my story, putting myself out there and making a bit of a fool of myself helps just one person find the courage to speak up, then every bit of effort I’ve put into this calendar will have been worth it. “Plenty of my customers already know about my new modelling career, and it’s certainly given them something to laugh about! The calendars are £10 each, with 1,200 being produced and 100 going to each participating butcher. People can reserve theirs directly through P A Fisher butchers with no payment taken until they arrive. The project has been entirely funded through sponsorship, with all profits going to Mental Health UK.
