The first customer was Steve Carter who travelled from Horsham, closely followed by two regular Jigsaw enthusiasts from Cranleigh.

However, with many fundraisers still not possible due to the pandemic, Tim Woodcock – the club’s chairman of fundraising – is asking if people to ‘Feed the Lions’ by collecting any surplus loose change into one of the jars available from the bookshop.

He said: “Any additional income for our charities will be gratefully received at this difficult time, with so many of our usual fundraising events cancelled.”

The shop is currently open three days a week – Thursday, Friday and Saturday – from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm each day.

Harvey Holmes, who handles the club’s publicity, said: “Many donations have been received, but please, still either one bag or box at a time as all donations are quarantined for 72 hours before being put out on display.

Masks still need to be worn and customers are asked to sanitise their hands and use the gloves provided, making it safe when picking items up to look at and then returning them to the shelves.”
