The students were keen to support their local community during the Covid-19 crisis and, prompted by ex-teacher and head of study support Paul Clarke, decided to donate personal protection items that they would normally have been using in science lessons.

Paul wrote to college principal Sally Bromley: “A number of local care homes would be very grateful for any goggles or visors you can locate in science stock cupboards.

“Some nursing homes have staff off sick and no hope of replacing them with agency staff. The situation is as challenging as anything you can imagine.”

College head of science Sally Ponton was able to let estate staff know where spare goggles and gloves and other items were located and collection and distribution was arranged to Aniska Lodge care home, Kings Court care home, Oakhill care home and Ashtonleigh care home.

Sally Bromley said: “Medicine and health and social care related professions are still our most popular progression aims for our students.

“The students were delighted that equipment that they would have been using in the college science laboratories will be used in this way.”
