'Hotel-style' care home planned for site of former Horsham Fire Station

A state of the art ‘hotel-style’ care home – with cinema and hair salon – is planned to be built on the site of Horsham’s former fire station.

A formal planning application has been submitted to Horsham District Council to knock down the old fire station in Hurst Road and replace it with the 75-bed home which will care for people with dementia and those needing nursing care.

The application has been lodged by property developers Zephyr X on behalf of EQ Care. Agents for Zephyr X – AP Architecture – in a statement to the council say that the home is designed to be a ‘modern dementia care home providing quality care.’

If planning permission is granted, it will consist of six houses which will be self contained ‘allowing for a more personal care package to be delivered for each client who will be living within an approriate environment.’

The purpose-built home will have various lounges, including training facilities, as well as a hairdressing salon and cinema, along with formal and informal gardens where residents can grow vegetables for the home if they wish. All of which, say agents, “are intended to improve the quality of life for the residents of the home along with normal ‘hotel services’ including a commercial kitchen and laundry.”

All ground floor bedrooms will have their own patios.

Horsham’s old fire station was built in 1968 but has been vacant since a new purpose-built fire and training station was opened at Highwood village off the A24 two years ago.
