'I hear they want to make Peacehaven part of Brighton - well, we'll see about that! - pop legend weighs in on row over Government plans for the town

Plans to make Peacehaven part of Brighton became an unlikely talking point during an open-air show by pop legends Madness.

The veteran ska band played the first of two nights at the On the Beach festival on Thursday night (23 July) to a crowd of 8,000.

Frontman Suggs introduced members of the band before playing one of their biggest hits, House of Fun.

Turning to guitarist Chris Foreman, he described him as 'a son of Brighton', adding 'He loves it down here.'

But Chris retorted: "Actually, I live in Peacehaven now. And you know what? I hear they want to make Peacehaven part of Brighton - well, we'll see about that!"

Chris is back performing with the band after a battle with blood cancer.

His comments come as the government released the results of its consultation on the LGR modified proposal to move Falmer, East Saltdean, Telscombe and Peacehaven into Brighton & Hove.

80 per cent of the residents who responded reacted negatively to the plan.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, is strongly opposed to the proposals and says the Government’s decision ‘treats residents with contempt’.

She has said all options are on the table for LDC, including a possible legal challenge.
