Located next to Gardner and Scardifield in London Road, Burgess Hill, Tamp and Grind has a really calming atmosphere when you walk in.
I spoke to the Founder, Adam Moseley, and asked him what makes a specialty coffee. "It starts with the coffee we buy, so the roastery that roasts the coffee, they buy the coffee as araw product, but it's been graded from zero to a hundred, by the Specialty Coffee Organisation, and for it to be considered a specialty, it has to be graded above eighty points, and the house we use is about 83 points out of a hundred. For our decaff we use a different roaster, Frida's, and then we have a guest coffee on each month as well, we use only Sussex companies for that, and that will always be speciality grade."
"The grinders we use are top of the range, one of the best you can get, and the training the barrista's get to make sure they use the equipment properly, the whole encompassing of that makes a specialty coffee. And you need all of these elements to make a specialty coffee."
Talking about his plans for the future Adam said, "We've got two shops now, here and Lancing, and we're going to do a collaboration with a wine bar in Steyning, so we're going to have a morning coffee contingency for them. In 2027 we're going to be opening up a coffee shop in Horsham, which will be in collaboration with Garner and Scardifield, so that's the plan at the moment."
"Max Filleul, the Manager at Burgess Hill was in the parachute regiment till July/August this year. Max is a friend of a friend, and alot of our visions align, so Max came onboard for here as a new partner, as I can't go at it all alone. And any future ventures we're going to do together."
The food counter is filled with delectable-looking treats, including white chocolate and raspberry cookies, hazelnut pain au chocolat, millionaires cookie slice, Kinder bueno cookie, almond croissant, lumberjack sausage roll, and the Greek veggie. They also sell vegan croissant and pain au chocolat, as well as bags of ground coffee
I couldn't help but notice how kind everyone was to me. I was welcomed in like a friend, and I loved the wall of dog pictures, taken by members of staff, and showcasing the furry friends who are also welcome into the shop.
And the coffee?….I absolutely loved it, and will definitely be back!
