I visited one of the best free Christmas light trails in Sussex – and I loved it

Light Up Shoreham brings huge crowds to the town centre each Christmas, with market stalls, a funfair live music and so much more for people of all ages to enjoy.

One of the biggest draws is the Christmas light trail created by Same Sky artists, a free festive feast of lantern sculptures put on display in collaboration with Adur and Worthing Councils.

I've been going for years and each Christmas, I look forward to seeing what wonders will unfold in the churchyard surrounding St Mary de Haura in Shoreham town centre.

Creatures are often a highlight of the displays and this year didn't disappoint, with a charming deer scene and a pair of polar bears, adult and baby.

What is absolutely great about it is that it is totally free. Anyone can go along and see the wonderful lanterns and spend as long as they like looking at them.

I personally go round and round, up and down each of the pathways, as there are lanterns place on all sides of the church, in the trees, hidden in the undergrowth – everywhere!

The Light up Shoreham Christmas Market on Friday, December 12, drew a huge crowd and local businesses were also open for late-night shopping.

Stalls lined East Street and the Shoreham Centre, there was a fair in Pond Road, with live music adding to the atmosphere, and Shoreham Library was open late, hosting story sessions for the children.

Marlipins Museum, in High Street, held its annual Christmas fair and there will be an historical film presentation on the outside, on the wall in Middle Street. David Parker, artistic director at Figment Arts, has been working with the museum on Port Stories, a project exploring the history and memories of Shoreham Harbour. He will project a repeating compilation of films from Screen Archive South East, lasting eight to ten minutes and featuring Shoreham Port and Harbour from the 1950s to the 1990s.
