There was dancing, drumming and toasting apple trees when traditional Sussex Wassail event took place at Gensing Gardens in St Leonards on Saturday (January 31).

The event, organised by The Friends of Gensing Gardens, is now in its fourth year and attracted a good crowd of onlookers.

Rheda’s Dream Morris side led the proceedings, joined by local drumming group Raven.

The event also celebrated the first anniversary of the Gensing Gardens compost bins with thanks to Hastings Compost Community.

Organisers provided apple juice and cake to share.

Wassailing apple trees in the winter months dates back to Anglo Saxon times and has always taken place in Sussex, where it is also known as Howling.
