In pictures: Hastings charity prepares hundreds of Christmas hampers for those in need

One of the area’s oldest local charities is getting geared up for another busy period.

Surviving Christmas, which has been active now for approaching 50 years, is anticipating an increase in demand for support to people in the Hastings and Rother area over the festive period.

The charity's activities comprise two main areas. First they will pack and distribute in excess of 900 hampers to local residents in need of help. They will then feed up to 150 people on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Megan Skinner, from the charity, said: “These people are not just the homeless; we welcome anyone who needs us, whether with food or simply with company.

“Our Hamper Pack project takes place at Battle Abbey School from 14-19 December, run completely by volunteers.

"The hampers are issued to families and individuals nominated by support organisations, carers, and other local agencies. They contain many basic food items and some seasonal treats as well. The intention is to relieve the families of some of their day to day expenditure, leaving them a little more money to spend on Christmas things which they otherwise might not be able to afford. A new toy is included with the hamper for every child in the family of junior school age and younger.

“There is likely to be a significant increase in the cost of the content of the hampers. Last year the cost was in the region of £40, but this year, the costings indicate a price in the region of £50, even with a decrease in the size of some items.

"The Charity would welcome sponsorship of a hamper or hampers. Also, any donation of new toys for the ages mentioned above would be welcomed; children of families we support often get ‘hand me downs’. Further information is available on the Surviving Christmas web site, www.survivingchristmas.co.uk/

“Our second main event will take place at His Place in Robertson Street on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, where seasonal food will be available to people in need of warmth, company, some entertainment and medical advice. Here again, although some of the food provided will be generously donated, a significant increase in the cost of food to be purchased for the event is anticipated and donations towards its cost would be most welcome. Further information is available on the Charity’s website.”
