People were amazed to see what they thought was a pirate ship close to the shore at Hastings on the morning of September 10.

In fact it was the French registered two masted brig Phoenix. Built in 1929, the 112 ft long ship was built by Hjorne & Jakobsen at Frederikshavn, originally as an Evangelical Mission Schooner.

In 1991 she was converted to the likeness of the 15th-century caravel Santa Maria for Ridley Scott's film 1492: Conquest of Paradise.

Her other film credits include Hornblower, Frenchman’s Creek and Moll Flanders as well as appearing the BBC series Poldark, The Voyage of the Dawntreader and Taboo.

In 1976, Phoenix took part in the Tall Ships Races, which involved two transatlantic crossings in four separate legs,

Today Phoenix has an active charter sailing programme with people being able to book voyages throughout the year.

She had sailed to Hastings from Folkestone.
