‘It’ll be vandalised in a week’ – work set to start on Eastbourne’s new art installation

Eastbourne residents continue to share their reservations about a planned new artwork in Victoria Place, as workers this week sealed off the site in preparation.

Commissioned by Towner Eastbourne and funded through the UK Government's Levelling Up programme, artist Rana Begum has created the installation, which will be at the junction of Grand Parade.

The artwork features eight panels of toughened, coloured glass, and although it will be maintained by Towner Eastbourne once completed, locals fear it will become a magnet for graffiti.

Writing on our Facebook page, William Robertson says: “Another wall for someone to tag.”

Steve Atter agrees: “It will have ORB and jesus Christmas written on it in the first day.”

Mark Sands adds: “Can't wait for some "ART" to be scribbled all over it.”

Installation of the artwork is expected to be completed by 4 December, and Fiona Parkinson believes it will be ‘vandalised within a week!’

Others are concerned about the new work’s reflective properties.

“So how will light reflection impact the shops, car drivers and the pedestrian crossing?” asks one.

Clifford Haffenden says: “Have to put tape on it so people don’t walk into it.”

But Stephanie Foreman disagrees: "I think it looks modern and trendy and def doesn’t need tape, are people colour blind?”

And Kev English jokes: “We asked for transparency.... This is what they came back with.”

Other readers are more enthusiastic about the installation.

“Looking forward to seeing it,” says Matt Collins.

Louise Cullen agrees: “Looks interesting, I’ll be definitely going to see once completed.”

Kev English: “We asked for transparency.... This is what they came back with.”

Michael Lewis: “From what has been reported it seems the 'art' installation will be a modern day, woke, rainbow version of the Hall of Mirrors. Eastbourne Borough councillors will be able to finally look themselves in the mirror!”
