Four miles of traffic queues were reported on the A27 in East Sussex this morning (Thursday, October 15).
Temporary traffic lights are in place on the A27 Lewes Road due to electrical works.
The roadworks are causing ‘long’ delays, with traffic queuing nearly four miles back on the Polegate Bypass, according to AA Traffic News.
And it has been revealed the works will last until late November.
Annie Hollands writes: “In conjunction with the Ersham Road into Hailsham being shut means all Hailsham traffic adding to the queues
Love the joined up thinking. The area is grinding to a halt!”
Kaytea An asks: “Surely the lights need to be changed sequence/ work overnight, this literally bought the whole area to a standstill.”
Hdg Diane said: “Took me 40 mins to get into eastbourne this afternoon at these roadworks and that was before rush hour.”
Kellie Lindsay adds: “Two hours to get to Hailsham! Can’t do this for 6 weeks!”
“Half an hour would have been nice, over two hours trying to just get out of Eastbourne,” says Keri Nott.
Nash Travelman writes: “Regardless of the cause, the cumulative traffic demonstrates that these key corridors need a massive uptick in bus connections availiablity.”
Sam Stonard says: “Absolutely appalling disruption caused by "works" to non-essential traffic lights. And why have the temporary lights not been set up to replicate the original lights ie two way traffic on the A27 being stopped for traffic to exit the junction. Nope instead they have set up 3 way temporary lights. This is not a crossroads. It's a junction. There are two other junctions onto the A27 in the immediate facility which do not have the benefit of traffic lights. And there are thousands of similar junctions across the country that have to wait for traffic before exiting. Why is this junction special? Don't repair these lights. Remove them instead. They do not benefit the traffic on a major A road but regularly cause congestion to the wider community.”
April Dawson says: “We missed 2 trains as it took an hour to get from Willingdon to Polegate. Yet it’s okay to build new houses feeding onto an a road already in gridlock . Yet again, no infrastructure works which are decades overdue on A22 and A27. As the major roads in this area, businesses must lose thousands in delays.”
Sheena Dine shared a picture of the bumper to bumper traffic with us, saying simply: “It’s a nightmare.”
