It comes as nonessential stores have been told by the Government they can reopen from Monday (June 15), following the easing of lockdown measures.

The centre in Kingfisher Drive has been open throughout the pandemic, with essential businesses like Tesco and Iceland still trading.

However, from Monday (June 15), more businesses at Langney Shopping Centre will begin to reopen, with added safety measures.

The car park is fully open but access to the shops will be through the Kingfisher Drive entrance only.

Langney Shopping Centre said it will be considering opening the eastern entrance once the centre is fully operational – hopefully in late June or early July.

Its cafes can only open for takeaway and hairdressers cannot open just yet, but the shopping centre says it will keep everyone updated.

Centre manager Neil Avis said, “It’s been very weird. We are very lucky we had traders carrying on trading, so they kept the centre alive.

“There has been some sense of normality in a reduced and restricted way.

“Our customers have responded very well. Although it was weird and felt like a ghost town all of a sudden you have got queues outside shops.”

The shops will be operating a ‘one in one out’ policy to maintain social distancing, Mr Avis said.

“I think people will be venturing out,” he said, “The big thing we are looking at is disability, and helping those who are shielding return to the centre.

“It seems the elderly have been staying away. I’m hoping they will feel brave enough to come out.

“We have worked very hard to put new measures in place.”
