Following an article this week in which the new owner of the disused West Street department store hinted at what residents might see fill the building, we asked our readers what they would like to see.

Readers were split in their dreams of what the listed building could one day become.

Discount clothing store Primark proved a contentious prospect with plenty of back-and-forth as to whether Chichester is the right place for the chain.

Luke Titcombe said: "Primark for sure. Its affordable clothing. Plus it will bring people to the area and help support the rest of the city."

Dee Russell agreed and said a Primark would bring more people into the city centre.

Others described it a 'dreadful shop' and kicked back against the pro-Primark comments.

Iain Jessup shared some creative ideas for the site and said: "Independent shops and eateries - no chains. Upstairs a clinic to help clear backlogs in ophthalmology, rheumatology and cancer."

Trevor Shepherd had a similar idea to help support independent businesses.

He said: "An arcade with affordable pop ups for independent retailers to showcase innovative products and ideas."

Jane Towers suggested: "Independents retailers on the ground floor, restaurant and affordable flats on the upper floor."

Michael Bennett said he would like a casino and poker room.

Trevor Gaffney wants a nightclub in the listed building.

Brian Steen's answer was short and sweet: "Laser Quest."

One suggestion that appeared a number of times on social media was Woolworths which has not had a shop in Britain in the past seven years.
