Lewes Black Lives Matter protest – in pictures

Hundreds of residents lined the streets of Lewes on Monday (June 8), to protest over the death of George Floyd.

The peaceful protest saw crowds holding banners gather in Cliffe High Street. Mick Symes, joint admin of Lewes Present Facebook group, said: “Lewes saw a well-supported vigil that lined the Cliffe and town high streets from St Thomas à Becket Church to the war memorial. Hundreds of residents, many who possibly have not supported such an action before lined the streets, responsibly socially distancing.” The protest is one of many that have been held nationally following the tragic death of African American George Floyd who died in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25. Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international human rights movement, originating from within the African-American community, which campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people.
