Lewes Bonfire 2022: Road closures and travel news for the November 5 event

Visitors to Lewes for the world famous bonfire night are being advised to not travel to the event.

The event, run by six different Lewes bonfire societies, is one of the biggest November 5 events in the country, with more than 30 processions taking place through the narrow streets of the East Sussex town.

Lewes District Council have said road closures will affect large parts of Lewes town on the day. Diversions will be in place for traffic to travel outside of the town and residents are advised to get vehicles home before 4pm to avoid any road closures in place.

The council said roads in Lewes will re-open at 2am or once Sussex Police deem it safe to do so and the cleaning of the town is complete by waste crews.

Parking restrictions will begin to be imposed from noon, with on-street parking being suspended on certain streets in the town. Vehicles must be removed from these routes or risk being towed away if they are not.

The A27 will be open to through traffic only for the duration of the event, but no parking or waiting is allowed and vehicles risk being towed if parked.

Those with parking permits in the town that need assistance on alternative parking locations for the evening have been asked to contact the East Sussex County Council parking team on 01273 335500 or parking.information@eastsussex.gov.uk.

Purple Routes: Road will be closed from 4pm to 2am. On-street parking is suspended from 12pm, vehicles risk being towed from 2pm.
Blue Route: Road will be closed from 4pm to 2am. On-street parking will be suspended from 12pm, vehicles risk being towed from 2pm.
Black Route: Westbound traffic only from 4pm to 7pm. There will be no access to Lewes from A27 during this time. This road will be closed from 4pm - 2am. On-street parking is suspended from 12pm, vehicles risk being towed from 2pm.
Orange Route: Road will be closed from 5pm to 2am. On-street parking in authorised bays is permitted.

They are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on a Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Changes to rail services had already been planned, after it was announced that further industrial action is planned for November 5, which will impact services in to Lewes.

The council has advised those travelling by train to check with Rail Enquires for details of your specific journey.

For those travelling by bus, the council has confirmed that there will be diversions to services and have asked passengers to check with the bus operating companies for specific changes and disruption.
