Photographer Eddie Mitchell captured the final stages of the bonfire being built, as residents donated the final wood, garden waste or pallets before the wind began to whip up.
The volunteer-led group that organises the annual event initially confirmed it would be going ahead as planned on Saturday, October 24, but an update was issued on Friday, October 23.
A message posted to the group’s Facebook account today reads: “BONFIRE EVENT CHANGE
"Littlehampton Bonfire Celebrations 2026 will NOT take place on Saturday 24th October 2026 HOWEVER we have come up with an alternative plan!
"SUNDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2026
“Sunday 25th October 2026 we see a scaled back event which will feature the lighting of our bonfire, grand fireworks display and family funfair.
“The timetable for Sunday is as followed:
16:00hrs - Family FunFair opens on seafront
19:30hrs - Lighting of our Bonfire
20:00hrs - Fireworks Display
“There will be NO procession!
“Thank you to everyone for your support and we will see you on Sunday evening!”
So, to be clear, the procession will not take place at all this year. There will be a celebration on Sunday, however, to include the fun fair, bonfire and fireworks.
