Magic Minders from Worthing and Arun celebrate Childminding Week 2026

Childminders from Worthing and Arun have gathered for their annual picnic at High Salvington Windmill to celebrate the national Childminding Week 2026.

The morning of fun on Wednesday, May 13, saw members of Magic Minders, the Worthing Childminding Association, enjoy fun and games together.

The association was formed in 2002 as a not-for-profit organisation, with the aims of supporting childminders and actively raising the profile of professional, registered childminding as a positive childcare choice for parents.

Rebecca Martland, founder member, said: “We have to fulfil the same statutory requirements as a nursery or pre-school but we have much better ratios, one to three for all ages from baby to five.

“It is an isolating job, mostly working alone, so we get together fortnightly during term time at Worthing Town Football Club and we arrange events and outings together.”

There has been a national decline in childminder numbers due to a number of factors, including funding and the burden of Ofsted inspections, but the association, which covers Worthing and Arun, is bucking the trend.

Rebecca said: “We have around 50 members. We have done quite well because nationally, the numbers have halved in 12 years but we have lost only about 20 per cent.

“We provide a well-used vacancy scheme that helps parents find the right childminder or nanny, while supporting members to fill their spaces. This service is completely free for families seeking registered, home-based childcare in the Worthing and Arun area.”

The association started with drop-in sessions at Emmanuel Church in 2002 and has continued to grow and evolve ever since. Members are now looking forward to celebrating 25 years next year.

The theme for Childminding Week 2026 was Magic of Childminding, promoting small, home-based settings with big learning, strong relationships and meaningful moments that children carry with them for life.

Rebecca said: “Organisations like Magic Minders are vital, providing information, support and advice to members to ensure they are able to successfully navigate changes in legislation and continue to thrive.

“We are proud to celebrate and support the dedicated childminders in our community who make such a meaningful difference to children and families every day.”
