New York drama degree beckons for Barnham student

William Robinson has a place to study an associate degree in acting at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) in New York.

But in order to take up the offer to study in the heart of American theatre the 18-year-old needs to raise some $53,000, around £33,700.

The money will fund his education and the cost of his accommodation while he studies in the first year. He will need additional funding to help him complete his second year.

He said: “This really is a once in a life-time opportunity for me. Not only because of the opportunities it will give me to improve my acting and learning, but also because of the life experiences it will give me.

“Moving to another country straight after I have finished my A-levels is something a lot of people don’t have the chance to do.

“I am just a normal teenager and to have the chance to be able to do something like this is fantastic.”

The former St Philip Howard Catholic High School student, who lives in Warren Way, received his A-level results last week. He gained a B in Drama and theatre and maths and a C in Physics.

William has already received a merit scholarship from AADA of $7,000 and has already begun to work on ways to help him raise the additional funds he needs.

He is also awaiting the outcome of another bursary.

“St Philip Howard have been incredibly supportive and have agreed to let me hold some of my fundraising events here,” said William.

“I am planning a concert which will be held at the school and other sponsorship events. The staff have really been excellent.

“I am also working non-stop to try and earn as much money as possible. The merit scholarship has helped a lot but there is still along way to go.”
