As part of a concerted effort to draw attention to the scheme, they have published a notification explaining specific areas of objection to the Shawpits Development. They are told: "There are over 150 objections so far and still weeks to go."
The notice says the emerging Wealden plan says this site is 'undevelopable and undeliverable.'
And they go on: "This will transform the historic Hellingly village forever as 280 households will choose to use a single lane, medieval track Mill Lane, as a rat run onto the A267 avoiding the schools.
They say "Two hundred and eighty houses will also mean the flooding Hellingly already experienced in the winter will get worse.."
Also cited are harm to wildlife and habitats, pressure on local schools and healthcare, damage to the rural landscape, light pollution, distance from facilities and no safe pedestrian routes.
They ask people to add their comments at WD/2026/1679/MAO via the DC's website quoting the app number. The closing date for submissions is October 2.
Developers, London based Hallam Land, state the scheme follows a 'logical settlement pattern' north of Hailsham and would create a new neighbourhood with its own distinct character.
It would also offer active travel connectivity and a green and blue infrastructure network with extensive planting of trees and hedgerows.
